This question has come up several times for our team as we have been assisting some larger organisations with their DSE Assessments. Paul, one of our Health and Safety Consultants, put together an illustrative piece to get people to think about the alternatives. Q: What have Da Vinci, Charles Dicken, Lewis Carrol, Ernest Hemingway and Winston Churchill all got in common? A: They all did their work at standing desks! Creative geniuses, such as Leonardo da Vinci, must have noticed the perks of standing while working. Da Vinci stood at his easel to paint such masterpieces as the Mona Lisa and the Last Supper. He also used a standing desk when he developed ideas for several inventions such as his flying machines. Charles Dickens, famous for some of the best literature ever written did so at a standing desk. However this is only half the story some say standing desk are not that good, so look at all the options. Swiss ball chairs are ideal for getting you to sit in the correct position feet flat on the floor and not slouching forward plus; you never sit still. Standing desks help you think and develop ideas, and while doing this, you are burning 170 calories … So it’s not all bad. Stand or sit? Standing or sitting is all down to choice and what feels better for you, so think about it, mix it up a bit and do a bit of both. Standing up and walking gets blood pumping to your brain and can boost your creativity. Sitting in the correct position helps your posture. So be like Ernie, Chas, and Winnie, and stand …..or sit… it up to you. But remember doing a Display Screen Equipment assessment will help you find out more!
