Reviewing risk assessments

Risk assessments are an important part of health and safety in the workplace. In fact, you can read our previous Simply Put article about risk assessments here. In this article, we’re looking at when companies should be reviewing risk assessments.

Risk assessments should not be thought of as unnecessary paperwork. Instead, put simply, it’s the process of thinking about what could go wrong and taking appropriate action to try and stop this.

Risk assessments should be reviewed and revised:

  • When there has been a significant change. For example, changes to work equipment and machinery, employee turnover, changing the substances used, and changes to working procedures or premises.
  • When they are no longer appropriate. For example, following accidents, incidents and near misses, or when there are changes to legislation or guidance.
  • At regular and appropriate intervals. These will vary from business to business.
