8 December RIDDOR – How to report an incident For most companies, reportable incidents are a rare occasion. However, if they do occur, it is best to know how to deal with the issue and inform the appropriate authority. Who deals with this? The reporting of incidents at work is explained under The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995 (RIDDOR). What incidents should be reported? • Deaths. • Major injuries. • Some work related diseases. • Dangerous occurrences- where an accident does not occur but could have done • Injuries to the public (who are then taken to hospital from the scene of the accident). • Over 3 day injuries (when an employer/employee is away from work or unable to work properly for over 3 consecutive days). • Gas Safe registered gas fitters must report dangerous fittings they find. • Gas suppliers and conveyors must report some flammable gas incidents. Who should report an incident? • Employers. • Self employed individuals. • People in control of premises. Why should I report incidents? • It is a legal requirement. • It enables the HSE to identify how risks arise and investigate serious injuries that result. • It enables the HSE to provide advice on how to reduce and prevent injuries in the workplace. How do I report an incident? • By phone: 0845 300 99 23 (local rate) • Online: HSE RIDDOR – Report online • By email: riddor@connaught.plc.uk • By Post: Incident Contact Centre, Caerphilly Business Park, Caerphilly CF83 3GG When should I report an incident? • If the incident is death, serious injury or a dangerous occurrence, authorities must be informed immediately. • Over three day injuries should be reported within ten days of the incident occurring. • In the case of work related disease, these should be reported as soon as a doctor informs you that your employee suffers from a reportable work related disease.
