What Is Burnout?

Burnout is a state of physical, emotional and mental exhaustion caused by chronic work-related stress. When a person experiences burnout, they may feel overwhelmed, uninterested in work, and have decreased productivity. This can have significant impacts on both physical and mental health.

What are the associated risks?

Physical health risks associated with burnout include increased risk of cardiovascular disease, weakened immune system, and digestive issues. Chronic stress can also lead to sleep disturbances and physical fatigue, making it difficult to perform even routine tasks.

Mental health risks associated with burnout are even more concerning. Those suffering are at an increased risk of depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues. They may also struggle with concentration and decision making, and experience a decreased sense of personal accomplishment and satisfaction.

In addition to these health risks, burnout can also have serious consequences for a person’s personal and professional life. It can lead to decreased job satisfaction, reduced productivity, and increased absenteeism, which can, in turn, lead to job loss or decreased earning potential.

What can we do?

To prevent burnout, it is important to prioritise self-care and manage stress levels. This may include regular exercise, getting enough sleep, practising mindfulness and meditation, and finding ways to maintain a work-life balance. Seeking support from friends, family, or a mental health professional may also be beneficial.

Employers have a duty to protect workers from stress at work, and should actively promote a good culture of health and safety in the workplace. This could include assessing the risks of work-related stress, and knowing how to look out for and act upon signs of stress in employees.
